This doctoral thesis defense was delivered (and passed) on April 13th, 2020, at the Department of Soil Science of the University of Wisconsin - Madison by Michael J. Braus. The event was held online due to the statewide shutdown to slow the spread of COVID-19. Dr. Thea Whitman neglected to press "Record" on the Bb Collaborate software, so audio was recovered from a secondary recording and slides re-recorded.

An English translation of " Zur Theorie der Elektrolyte. I. Gefrierpunktserniedrigung und verwandte Erscheinungen ", written by Peter Debye and Erich Hückel and published in 1923 in the journal Physikalische Zeitschrift .  Much of electrochemistry, acid-base chemistry, and many other scientific fields were inspired by this single paper, and a highly legible English edition with typeset equations was warranted and overdue.  All scans of the original German publication can be found...
